May's Concert Presents "International Flair"
Pam Hahn, Vanja Gjumar Nikolovski
This month, Vanja talks about the season finale, "International Flair" and what went into creating it.
Q The “International Flair” concert coming up this Sunday is full of big, sweeping music from different countries. How did you choose which pieces to include?
A The good reason for the pieces from different places is to show that music has no borders. Plus, all compositions are very specific in their character, so I think that this program will create necessary contrast for the audience to enjoy it.
Q Do you have a favorite composition in this concert? If so, which is it and what makes it important for you?
A Probably the choice will be between Tchaikovsky and Copland, and I will give the slight priority to Tchaikovsky because 1812 evokes great memories from my musical past.
Q If you could choose to sit down to share a coffee with Owen Reed, Aaron Copland, Jean Sibelius, G.W. Chadwick or Tchaikovsky, who would you pick? What would you like to ask them about?
A This time I will choose Owen Reed, because I am very interested to know how much he enjoyed being in Mexico and how Mexican culture influenced him to write such an interesting piece.
